Becky’s Troop Care Packages Wins Local Touchstone Energy Community Award

Stearns Electric Association names Becky’s Troop Care Packages of St. Cloud as the winner of the 5th Annual Local Touchstone Energy Community Award.

After being selected out of 212 Operation Round Up applications as one of six finalists to be nominated for the award, Becky’s Troop Care Packages was selected as the winner of the 2018 Stearns Electric Touchstone Energy Community award. Becky Carlson accepted the $500 award and plaque on behalf of the organization in December. “Becky’s Troop Care Packages clearly demonstrates a strong commitment to community that we at Stearns Electric value highly,” Stearns Electric Operation Round Up Coordinator Michelle Christiansen said. “We are very pleased to recognize this organization’s contributions to our local community.”

Since November 2003, Becky has been sending 20 care packages each month to soldiers serving on dangerous duty in the Middle East. In December, that number increases to over 200 care packages. Every package contains familiar foods like lifesavers and beef jerky, comfort items and a hand-written letter expressing thanks to the soldier. In addition, Becky’s Troop Care Packages also helps troop families with emergency situations, for those left behind awaiting their soldier’s return home.

“We are pleased that as a Minnesota Touchstone Energy Cooperative, we have this opportunity to recognize those who impact our community in a positive way,” Christiansen said.

Becky’s Troop Care Packages award application will be submitted for consideration for the statewide Minnesota Touchstone Energy Community Award. The statewide award winner will be selected from a pool of local award winners from around Minnesota. The statewide winner will receive $1,000 toward their community cause and be presented an award in March, during the Minnesota Rural Electric Association’s annual meeting in St. Paul.
Becky’s Troop Care Packages is funded fully by local donations and an annual fundraiser. If you’re interested in learning more, donating care package items or volunteering to help Becky Carlson with her Troop Care Package Project, contact Becky at
