Wholesale Power

Stearns Electric Association purchases and distributes power from its wholesale suppliers, Great River Energy and the Western Area Power Administration. In 2019, 64.3% of every dollar collected by Stearns Electric Association was used to purchase wholesale power.

GREAT RIVER ENERGY

Great River Energy is a not-for-profit electricity provider owned by 27 distribution cooperatives (including Stearns Electric) in Minnesota and Wisconsin which generates and transmits electricity. Great River Energy provides wholesale electric service to its member-owners who distribute electricity to approximately 660,000 member consumers – or about 1.7 million people. WESTERN AREA POWER ADMINISTRATION

The Western Area Power Administration markets and delivers reliable, renewable, cost-based hydroelectric power and related services within a 15-state region of the central and western U.S. The Western Area Power Administration is one of four power marketing administrations within the U.S. Department of Energy whose role is to market and transmit electricity from multi-use water projects. Stearns Electric purchased 8.6% of its energy from the Western Area Power Administration in 2021.
