Facility Focus: New Operations Center and Headquarters Strengthens Service and Reliability
Nearly seven months ago, our Melrose crews began starting their mornings differently. Instead of navigating tight storage areas and multiple buildings, lineworkers now gather, load equipment and head into the field from one coordinated, purpose-built space − improving both safety and response time.
That change reflects the opening of Stearns Electric’s new Operations Center and Headquarters in Melrose, which officially opened on August 19, 2025. Replacing our aging, 50-year-old facility, was a decision guided by a clear purpose: to strengthen our ability to deliver safe, reliable electricity to our nearly 29,000 members across six Central Minnesota counties.
Already, we are seeing the difference in how we operate every day in stronger coordination, safer workflows and better service for our members.
From an operations standpoint, efficiency improved immediately. All major equipment is now parked under one roof and most materials are housed in the same building. That may sound simple, but it significantly streamlines response times and reduces unnecessary delays. For example, our mechanic now has the space and modern equipment to safely service multiple vehicles at once, keeping our fleet ready and reducing downtime.
Additionally, the linemen’s room sits directly next to operations, allowing faster communication before crews head into the field. Purpose-built collaboration spaces allow teams to gather quickly during outages or storm events. When response time matters, layout matters.
Behind the scenes, our technology infrastructure is just as important for reliability. The facility was built with redundant power and network pathways to reduce downtime risk. In a utility environment, IT interruptions can delay switching operations, outage response and member communications. A resilient facility minimizes those risks and protects both service continuity and member trust.
Security has also been strengthened across the property. Controlled access points, enhanced surveillance, expanded fob access tracking and automatic locking systems help protect employees, assets and secure areas. The fenced-in pole yard and secured material storage provide additional safeguards. These measures not only protect property; they protect the people who serve our members every day.
Across departments, improved workflow is translating into better service. Intentionally designed office layouts reduce distractions and allow teams to focus on member calls, financial work and project coordination. Improved digital tools and better organization are helping us work more efficiently and reduce long-term costs.
We have also been able to host companywide safety trainings and Cooperative meetings in ways that were simply not possible in our old space. Bringing everyone together in one space strengthens preparedness and reinforces the safety culture that guides everything we do.
I appreciate the many members who have asked about the new Operations Center and how it is making a difference. We are grateful for the trust of our member-owners. This investment goes beyond a new building. It strengthens our systems, improves security and coordination, and supports the reliable service our members count on.
I’m proud to say we are already seeing the impact.
Sincerely,
Matt O’Shea
